Next Generation Home – GENIO - by Aragon Institute of Tefchnology (ITA), Spain

Abstract: Nowadays, huge R&D efforts are running on the re-invention of the Internet so that it is able to cope with future challenges, like the viral growth in the number of connected users, devices, services and user-generated contents. For these efforts to succeed, network management needs to cross the boundary of the NTU (Network Termination Unit) to manage the new devices that appear in the home network. GENIO will define the home network of the future, focusing in the following main areas:

  • Converged remote management and advanced self-management of the home network
  • Ubiquitous access to home contents
  • Personalization

GENIO is a running project under the CELTIC umbrella. GENIO already started in November 2009 and it is 3 years long. At this moment we are looking for new partners to cover the gap left by a Finland partners which have dropped the project. The Spanish consortium is complete, so the project could accept partners from other countries.

Content-Based Audio-Visual Quality Assessment for Multimedia Networks – CBAVQA - by

RT_RK L.C.C. (SME) in cooperation with Faculty of Technical Sciences, University of Novi Sad (Serbia)

Abstract: The CBAVQA project is intended for multimedia quality of service (QoS) control, in respect to video and audio quality that should be guaranteed and maintained. This requires development of video assessment tools for real-time network monitoring with objective metrics which are well matched with subjective feeling by end-users, and its suitable utilization, adaptation and application in smart multimedia networks. An important aspect of the proposed quality assessment framework is that it performs real-time QoS monitoring, which is considered essential in current multimedia networks. The proposed video and audio quality assessment scheme is to be applied for different multimedia content based on a specifically optimized content-driven framework. This includes development and implementation of content-based clustering algorithms within an advanced framework for no-reference video quality assessment in multimedia management, storage and consumption.

Universal Platform for Global Multimedia Device Cooperation – UPGMDC - by MERA Labs (Russia)

Abstract: The project is aimed at creation of a set of technologies that would allow multimedia devices, as well as services, of different purposes, capabilities and from different manufacturers to transparently interoperate in a global scale (i.e. worldwide) over the Internet. Multimedia devices and services all over the world could join the so called Global Multimedia Device Communities. These communities could be built on the principles very much similar to that of social networks.

E-Shadow - system of digital footprints management – E-Shadow - by Elecard Devices (Russia)

Abstract: Currently over 3% of all Internet users are interested in their electronic shadow. Due to dramatic rising of digital information amount, the number of such people is getting larger and larger every day. In the nearest 2-3 years this problem will come to its highest level. For privacy protection reasons users should be able to manage all this information to obtain the necessary balance between privacy and publicity, and to guarantee information security and correct interpretation of one’s personal information. While increasing the amount of information in the global context, the amount of information about particular subject also increases, leading to the extension of its digital shadow. The problem is, that anyone might get access to information, which is available to the public (i.e. which can be found via search systems or in social networks), and not always the intension are good. On the other hand, in some situations the subject puts some information into global networks with purpose, and wants this information to be left public. This is why the main requirement now is to control one's digital shadow.

The project aims to create novel technologies in the area of organization and tracking of unordered data, which might be stored in any kind of resources, including local PC storage, open Internet resources and corporate databases. All this data can be referenced in virtual world as "digital shadow", casted from any object (or subject) in material world. It will create intuitive tools for a user to track and control digital shadow which exists in the digital space. This necessity goes from the fact, that after nearly every action its result or digital footstep remains somewhere in the universe. The whole set of this digital footsteps (like textual data, audio- and video-information) is a subject's digital shadow.

The key advantage is association of different data types from different data sources in different formats (databases, documents, e-mails, history of internet browsing, URLs, video- and audio-content, blog posts, accounts in social networks, interests records, messages, usernames, forums visits, calendars records, etc.), consolidated in one unit.

The main idea is to enhance state-of-the-art information processing and analyzing methods, perform fundamental research of "digital shadow" phenomena, which has already stochastically formed. As a result of the project, formalized description of "digital shadow" will be developed, along with technology of such data management, in order to put abstract concept into concrete form to be able to collect information, analyze it, put it into certain categories and deliver it to end-user in the most convenient way.

Further development of the project will change the whole information processing paradigm from passive search to active and intelligent data acquisition, e.g. generating new details of digital shadow based on existing information or signalling about absent information, which must be added to have complete profile.

The project will result in creating completed technology addressing the problem of tracking and use of private data. The system will be based on the latest approaches, such as neural networks and evolution algorithms. Methods of semantic data analysis, image recognition, audio recognition and video classification are also used as building blocks for the system. "Digital shadow" will include (but not limited by) the following types of information: Images, Video, Audio, Textual data, and 3-D or stereo-vision data. This will require integration and development of novel techniques dealing with various types of digital information.

INPUT - Intelligent Network Philosophy for User-driven digital Television – INPUT - by Elecard Devices (Russia)

Abstract: The goal of the proposal is to develop a flexible interactive mobile IP-TV communication infrastructure and service platform which supports dynamic TV-channel and Video-on-Demand service, provides high-quality (reaching DVD/HD rating) signal reception over wide range of IP-type networks (including hybrids of networks). The project will allow to diverse mobile terminal types by using a concept of terminal and network adaptation to the capabilities of both the device (computation power, display type etc.) and the network (type, bandwidth, variable congestion conditions etc). As a result the project will offer triple-A TV mobile services: “Anywhere, Anytime and Any terminal”. INPUT will elaborate an international specification based on intellectual network concept for DTV networks, over heterogeneous networks. The specification will include DTV CM (conceptual model) which will be based on EDP (Event detection points), SCP (Service control points) and SSP (Service switching points).

Creation of user-driven services ability is the main target of DTV CM research. DTV CM is expected to be a multilayer model similar to OSI model. The upper layer describes ASEs (application service elements) and the lower layer – hardware devices which DTV is based on. Middle layers will represent gradations from application to physical layers, and the latter will cover mobile (i.e. 3G and 4G systems), wireless (i.e. from Wi-Fi to WiMax and beyond) and wire line (i.e. from coaxial to multi-gigabit optical) networks. INPUT will bring a specification that will standardize development of common interoperable DTV networks.

European Open Content Delivery Network – EUROCDN - by Kendra Initiative (UK)

Abstract: The demand for high quality and bandwidth hungry media content is ever increasing. As high definition devices become the norm users are downloading and/or streaming larger and larger video files – from blockbuster movies to homemade videos. Network congestion and costs are again the hot issues. Indeed the BBC has been investigating building its own Content Delivery Network. What other large content providers will follow? Could this end up being the equivalent to every telecoms provider digging up the road again and again? Could we be more clever about this and end up with a world beating Internet content delivery solution? After all, mobile phone operators are now starting to share network infrastructure. Europe has always been a trailblazer when it comes to interoperability and standards...

There is an opportunity for Europe to work collectively to create a European Open Content Delivery Network. The EUROCDN project aims to research such an opportunity:

  • Investigate how potential conflicts between interested parties could be resolved.
  • Propose state of the art European Open Content Delivery Network protocols.
  • Build reference models.
  • Instigate cross-vendor and cross-country trials.
