Call for Contributions

November last year a call for action in the NEM Future Internet Activity were issued. We had a large demand from a lot of you to be part of the discussion but, as yet, very little real contribution. Plans for this NEM Activity now are to go ahead with trying to capture the first NEM scenarios for a publication which we hope to have ready in March.

Contributors to a meeting towards the end of February 2008 are kindly invited to consider the inputs received and discuss the conclusions we see across the different contributions. This paper will be used as the basis for a NEM contribution to the BLED Conference on the Future Internet in Europe at the end of March 2008 (www.fi-BLED.eu) Participation in the first day of the BLED event is open to all, but participation in days 2 and 3 is only open to projects and platform representatives. The NEM representatives for this workshop will be selected from the active contributors to this Activity.

So this is a reminder that you are invited to become active in this group but a warning that real involvement means making a contribution. The sort of inputs we want are two page papers making one or two clear points about relevant aspects of the Future Media/Future Internet. The sort of headings we would like to fill include:

  • ADVANCED APPLICATIONS and their demands on the network ROUTING AND ADDRESSING (should every router know every IP address?, are all packets created equal? Service specific routing?)
  • Service Oriented ARCHITECTURES SECURITY ARCHITECTURE (is security in the application enough?) MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING TRAFFIC CONTROL AND STATE, TRAFFIC RECORDS (LEGAL ISSUES?) Network Aware Services, Innovative user interfaces. Improved man-machine communications, (emotional devices?)

..but you can suggest others if you think they are important.

The format of the contributions should be simple and clear:

  • The problem statement,
  • The idea for solving this,
  • The issues we should address as a priority.

Contributions should be sent to: NEM-Internet-Input@nem-initiative.org.

And we hope in discussion can see that there are some common priorities that can be derived as the NEM priorities. Generic user scenarios will no conclusions on what new technologies are needed or what improvements are needed in existing networks and services are not that helpful here.

Please remember that membership of this discussion is granted to contributors only - All are welcome to contribute.

To the few people who have already contributed, thanks for your patience. Lets hope we get the critical mass to progress within the next couple of weeks.
