Abstract

GlobalNEM aims at identifying opportunities for collaborative research with experts around the world, stimulating the cooperation EU-Regions on specific technology themes.

GlobalNEM was launched in 2007-2008 and has continued its activity by permanently updating the connections with other projects promoting dialogue in the research field between Europe and other Regions. NEM, through GlobalNEM, is benefiting from all those other projects, not specialized in NEM technologies, but which have focused their activities by inserting NEM as one of the dialogue points, thanks to the active push from GlobalNEM.

GlobalNEM as launched thanks to the European Commission FP7 Support Action 4NEM and is currently supported through the European Commission Support Action FutureNEM.

Objectives

The launch of GlobalNEM Activity within NEM has been instrumental to channel the activities of NEM in the international domain. GlobalNEM is endorsed by the Executive Group, by the Steering Board and by the general Assembly of NEM, thus ensuring that the interests on activities around international cooperation are well known and guided by the NEM executive and staff bodies.

Several projects and cooperation activities are already working and others will be launched in the FP7 to strength the cooperation at different levels:

  • Disseminating the results of the European R+D activities.
  • Identification of the key stakeholders in the different regions of the world for promoting European technologies.
  • Promoting the cooperation of researchers from key areas around the world with relevant European projects, involving national projects, when appropriate.
  • Promoting roadmaps for technological cooperation between European and other areas of the world. Alignment of strategic research agendas and work programmes.
  • Identifying specific issues, like interoperability between European and non-European technologies,
  • Promoting harmonized standards.
  • Identification of the relation between policies, regulation and technologies, pushing for the development of technologies capable to supersede/remove regulatory barriers.

Initial focus was made on the following regions of the world: China, India, Russia, Latin America, South Korea, South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Japan and Mediterranean area. Subsequently other regions and countries have been added such as Canada, Belarus, Korea, Taiwan, Brazil and New Zealand. During this period, emphasis has been done on priorities and activities being conducted in Panama, Colombia, Uruguay, Chile, Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Venezuela, Colombia and Uruguay, India, South East Asia, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, South Asia, Asia-Pacific, Easter European Countries including Belarus, Georgia, and Ukraine.
